The Lord Mayor's Show: What You Should Know
The Lord Mayor's Show has been held for around 800 years. In 1215, King John granted the City of London the right to elect its own mayor, on condition that each new mayor travelled to Westminster to swear loyalty to the Crown. The journey became a procession, the crowds came out to watch, and the tradition continues today.
Today the show is a colourful, three-mile procession through the City on the second Saturday of November, with the new Lord Mayor travelling from Mansion House to the Royal Courts of Justice to take the oath.
